Colophon

Notes on how the site is built and what informs its typography, photography, and editorial register.

Typography

Body and headlines are set in GT Sectra by Grilli Type — a hybrid serif drawn from broken-nib calligraphic origins, with sharp triangular serifs and high stroke contrast. The text grade carries the long-form prose; the Display grade carries article titles and the footer signature. Navigation, captions, project metadata, footer reach text, and other chrome are set in Söhne Mono by Klim Type Foundry — an even-rhythm grotesque monospace whose engineering register matches the practice it sits inside. Both faces are licensed via the foundries’ web font programs.

Visual register

Documentary black-and-white photography on a warm-newsprint paper-tone in light mode, and a calm warm-dark in dark mode. The newsprint plus B&W combination is one of the most thoroughly developed visual languages in publication history; we chose it deliberately because the work the practice describes is real industrial work in real factories, and the documentary register honors that.

Layout discipline borrowed in spirit from a small set of editorial references — Schick-Toikka’s foundry pages for the chrome, Type Journal’s case-study chassis for the article body, and the underlying conviction (after Klim and Grilli) that typography itself can carry most of the design work a serious site needs.

Voice

Reference register: Deyan Sudjic — measured, observational, contextual, comfortable with abstraction, allergic to hype. British spellings throughout. Lean is capitalized as a proper noun for the methodology. The work the practice produces is called Work, not Case Studies. The tagline is “We grow capacity without growing capital.” Neil and Rishi write the case studies and field notes themselves; nothing on this site is ghost-written.

Build

Custom WordPress block theme. Vanilla CSS organized around custom properties — no Tailwind, no SCSS, no preprocessor. Type-system tokens, spacing, and the warm light/dark palette all live in one stylesheet at the top, and every page reads from those tokens. No tracking, no analytics, no cookies; the site does not need to know who you are to do its job.
