Via Seating

Flokk (from February 2025)

Manufacturing · Founded 1987 · Reno, Nevada · Approximately 150 employees · Acquired by Flokk February 2025

Via Seating was founded in Reno in 1987 by the Danish-born Thomas Sorensen as an American manufacturer of ergonomic task and conference seating for the commercial office market — a category then dominated by the Michigan-headquartered majors and open, from Sorensen’s read of it, to a Western-United-States manufacturer that could carry a broader range of ergonomic mechanisms, materials, and finishes and produce them on shorter lead times than the East-Coast producers were willing to offer. Nearly four decades on, Via operates from the same Reno campus with a workforce of about 150 employees, produces task, conference, executive, guest, and lounge seating for the American commercial office and healthcare markets, and — following a February 2025 acquisition by the Norwegian office-furniture group Flokk from Groupe Lacasse — is now part of one of the two largest European office-seating manufacturers.

The firm designs, manufactures, and finishes ergonomic seating for commercial office, healthcare, and higher-education end markets — task chairs in the mid- and high-price segments of the office-seating market, conference and executive chairs, guest and lounge seating, and multiple stool configurations. Product design work happens in Reno; the manufacturing sequence — welded steel frames, moulded polymer components, cushioning, upholstery, mechanism assembly, and final quality inspection — runs from a single Reno facility. The firm holds the industry certifications (BIFMA sustainability, GREENGUARD indoor air quality, ANSI ergonomic performance) that American commercial-office specifiers require, and now sits inside Flokk’s international distribution and design network.

What distinguishes Via Seating in the American office-furniture sector is the combination of a Reno single-facility manufacturing base with the mid-market breadth its product portfolio covers. The commercial office-seating industry consolidated over the last two decades into a small number of very large firms (Herman Miller/MillerKnoll, Steelcase, Haworth) and a long tail of small specialists; Via has operated at a mid-size scale that lets it carry a broad ergonomic mechanism library across a full product range while running production from a single American factory. The 2025 Flokk acquisition extended the firm’s reach into the European market and into the Flokk group’s design and sustainability apparatus without moving production out of Reno.
