Holt of California is the current-generation dealer arm of the Holt family whose founder, Benjamin Holt, coined and trademarked the word *Caterpillar* in 1904 to describe the tracked steam tractor he had built at the Holt Manufacturing Company works in Stockton, California — the machine that became the direct ancestor of the modern crawler tractor and lent the Caterpillar Tractor Company its name when Holt Manufacturing merged with the C. L. Best Tractor Company in 1925 to form it. The Holt family retained a dealership arm through and after that merger; more than nine decades later Holt of California is one of the elite Caterpillar dealers in the network, holds the authorised territory for sixteen counties across Central and Northern California, and employs roughly eight hundred people across its Pleasant Grove headquarters and its Sacramento, Stockton, Redding, and other regional service centres.

The firm sells, rents, and services the full Caterpillar equipment line — earthmoving and construction equipment, engines and power systems, forestry and agricultural equipment, material-handling equipment, and paving and compaction machinery — from a distributed network of branches designed to keep every corner of the sixteen-county territory within a service-response window from a nearby facility. The Holt family of companies also carries Holt Ag Solutions (agricultural equipment) and SITECH West (Trimble grade-control and site-positioning technology for construction), extending the group’s reach beyond the classical Caterpillar dealership footprint into the agricultural-technology and machine-guidance categories that now sit alongside the mechanical machinery on Californian construction and farm sites.

What distinguishes Holt of California among Caterpillar dealers is the direct historical lineage: the same family that gave the industry the word Caterpillar still runs a Caterpillar dealership in the same part of California where its founder built the first tracked tractor.
