Goodwin-Cole

Manufacturing · Founded 1888 · Sacramento, California · Privately held, veteran-owned

Goodwin-Cole began in Kansas City in 1888 as a tent-and-awning maker, migrated west to Sacramento in 1920, and took its lasting name from a partnership between Tom Goodwin and Robert Cole. One hundred and thirty-eight years on, the firm still fabricates industrial and architectural textiles — awnings, tents, tarpaulins, protective covers, specialty bags, shade sails — from its Belvedere Avenue facility in Sacramento, and has for the last several decades also carried a full ornamental-iron and security-hardware line, meaning a single Sacramento shop that once made tents for the western trade now handles both the fabric and the metal envelopes around Californian homes and businesses.

The firm’s two operating divisions run out of the same facility. The textile division fabricates awnings and canopies (residential and commercial), industrial tarpaulins and equipment covers, tents and event coverings, shade sails, and custom specialty bags on order — all cut, welded, sewn, and finished in-house from stock and speciality technical textiles. The ornamental-iron division handles design, fabrication, and installation of storm and security screen doors, window guards, safety releases, folding gates, iron fencing, gates, and electronic gate operators — a full metal-envelope business built over more than eighty-five years of ironwork practice inside the firm.

Goodwin-Cole’s distinguishing position is the length of its own operating memory: 138 years of continuous fabrication practice, all of it from a single American city, and now under veteran ownership. In a category where the small-shop textile-fabrication trade in most American cities has consolidated into national-brand suppliers or disappeared altogether, Goodwin-Cole has instead widened its scope — adding ironwork to textiles rather than narrowing — and remained the reference fabric-and-metal fabricator for a large section of Northern California’s residential, commercial, and civic building stock.
