Belimo
In January 1975, four Swiss engineers — Walter Burkhalter, Heinz Hutte, Walter Linsi, and Karl Stocker — sat down in Gossau, near Zürich, and decided to start a company to design the small electric motors that would, when fitted inside the air-handling systems of buildings, decide how much air a damper opens and how much hot or cold water a valve passes. They called the firm BELIMO, an acronym made of the three German verbs they considered the operating discipline of their trade: *beraten* (advise), *liefern* (deliver), *montieren* (install). Half a century later Belimo is the global market leader in motor control for heating, ventilation, and air-conditioning systems, listed on the Swiss Stock Exchange since 1995 and headquartered in Hinwil.
The firm designs and manufactures actuators and control valves for HVAC systems — the small but ubiquitous components that translate building-management-system commands into the physical motion of dampers, valves, and louvres in commercial, industrial, healthcare, and laboratory buildings. American operations are headquartered at Belimo Americas in Danbury, Connecticut, where the firm’s principal US manufacturing, logistics, and administration footprint sits; final-assembly and distribution for the western United States runs through a 17,600-square-foot LEED Gold facility in Sparks, Nevada that also serves as the western customer-service centre.
What distinguishes Belimo in its sector is the combination of single-product focus and global category leadership. Most HVAC component manufacturers operate as part of broader industrial-equipment portfolios; Belimo has stayed narrowly disciplined on actuators and control valves for fifty years, and is the firm whose products specifications departments default to when motor-control reliability matters more than purchase price. The Sparks facility’s LEED Gold certification — and the more recent expansion of the firm’s logistics and customisation operations in Sparks — is consistent with that operating philosophy: the building that ships HVAC controls is itself a demonstration of the system the firm makes possible.
The practice has worked with Belimo at the Sparks, Nevada facility and at the Danbury, Connecticut headquarters on Lean process implementation across operations.
